Mary, the mother of Jesus, is often depicted as meek and mild, wearing a blue dress and a serene expression. But there’s so much more to her story.

Mary was from Nazareth and engaged to Joseph. Both were descendants of King David. Mary was also a woman of deep faith. When Gabriel told her she would give birth to a son, even though she was a virgin, her immediate response was faith and obedience: “I am the Lord’s servant.”

Consider what this meant for Mary. Pregnancy and labor were dangerous, especially for a young, unmarried teenager. Being pregnant outside of marriage meant risking her life; Jewish law dictated death for adultery.

Even with so much at stake, Mary didn’t argue or resist. She trusted God to keep his promises. Her faith in God’s plan was greater than her fear of the unknown.

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, let’s strive to have faith like Mary’s - to trust God’s promises even when life feels uncertain.

Think about an area of your life where you need to trust God. Pray today for faith like Mary’s to say, “I am the Lord’s servant.”
