Have you ever noticed that worry always pulls you somewhere else? You can be sitting at home today, but your mind is already living through tomorrow’s problems. You’re thinking about what might happen, what could go wrong, and whether you’ll have what you need. And before you know it, you’re carrying the weight of a day that hasn’t even happened yet. The Israelites understood that feeling. In Exodus 16, they were wandering through the wilderness without knowing where their next meal would come from. So God provided manna from heaven—but he only gave them enough for that day.
Every morning, the Israelites had to trust that God would provide again. Some people tried to save extra for the next morning, which honestly makes sense. If you didn’t know when food would fall from the sky again, wouldn’t you want to keep some just in case? But by morning, the extra manna had spoiled.
God wasn’t just feeding his people; he was teaching them to trust him. Every morning, the manna reminded them: God provided yesterday, he is providing today, and he can be trusted with tomorrow.
That’s exactly what Jesus teaches us to pray in the Lord’s Prayer: “Give us today the food we need.” He doesn’t tell us to ask for everything we’ll need next week, next year, or ten years from now, but to ask God for what we need today. Planning for tomorrow isn’t wrong, but we can quickly run away with our plans and start believing we’ll only be okay if our plans happen. God isn’t asking you to ignore tomorrow. He’s asking you to stop carrying it today.
So when you pray the Lord’s Prayer today, bring God the specific thing you’re worried about. Your finances. Your family. Your job. Your future. Whatever it is, name it. And then release it to him. You don’t have to figure tomorrow out today. Because you don’t need tomorrow’s manna today. You only need to trust that when tomorrow comes, God will already be there and he’ll already be providing.
Pray: God, I’m carrying too much right now. Help me to let go of the future and trust in the good plans you have for me. Remind me that my future has always been in your hands, and that with you I’ll always have everything I need. Amen.
