Read:
"I've had a long day. I deserve to focus on me."
"If I don't look out for myself, no one else will."
"I'll show up for them once I've handled my own stuff."
Selfishness is sneaky because it feels like self-care. You're tired, you're busy, you've got your own stuff to deal with. Slowly, your needs move to the front and everyone else's move to the back. It's not that you don't love other people. It's that, without noticing, you've made yourself the main character and cast them as the supporting roles.
God hands you a different script: don't look out only for your own interests, but take a genuine interest in others, too (Philippians 2:3-4, NLT).
Notice what he doesn’t say: Not “instead of” your interests—in addition to them.
You don’t need to erase yourself or act like you don't matter. You just need to pay attention. Ask what the person in front of you needs. That question is the whole difference between keeping score and being on the same team.
Pray: God, I confess how often I make everything about me. Help me widen my view so I can actually see the people around me—their needs, their hurts, their hopes. Teach me to be more attentive to their needs. Make me more like Jesus, who put others first. Amen.
