Exile
Judah is defeated and some of the people are taken as captives to Babylon. There is both defeat and hope in this chapter. The defeat is obvious, and God expresses his frustration at the people ignoring his attempts to get their attention. The hope is that they will only be held captive for seventy years. That’s beyond the lifetime of Jeremiah’s original readers, but it does let them know God has not completely abandoned them.
There is hope for us as well. No matter what problems we experience today, there is hope for the future. We are not given specific timing, but have hope in Christ’s return and in eternity!
